Council approves funding for surveillance technology

Asheville City Council voted to approve funding for new surveillance technology on May 12, drawing sharp criticism from residents who packed the council chamber. The meeting, which took place at City Hall, saw the gallery filled with community members who broke into chants of "Shame! Shame! Shame!" immediately after the vote was announced.

Council passed two resolutions related to surveillance technology and public safety. Council member Kim Roney was the sole dissenting vote against both measures. The specific details of the technology and its total cost were not disclosed during the public portion of the meeting, but several speakers raised concerns about privacy, civil liberties, and the potential for misuse.

Proponents of the resolutions argued that the technology would help law enforcement respond more effectively to crime and improve overall public safety. They cited recent incidents in the city as justification for expanding surveillance capabilities. Opponents, however, said the council was moving too quickly without adequate public input or transparency. Many residents who spoke during the public comment period urged the council to delay the vote and hold additional community forums.

The chants from the gallery continued as council members left the dais. City staff did not immediately respond to requests for comment on when the technology would be implemented or what oversight measures would be in place.
