Scouts from across the St. Louis region, accompanied by their families, are trading traditional forests for asphalt this weekend as they set up camp in an unconventional location: World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois. The event, which brings together multiple troops for a unique outdoor experience, transforms the speedway’s sprawling grounds into a temporary campground filled with tents, campfires, and scouting activities.
Rather than hiking through wooded trails, participants are exploring the racetrack’s infield and grandstand areas, engaging in knot-tying, first-aid drills, and team-building exercises against the backdrop of towering grandstands and pit lanes. Organizers say the change of scenery offers scouts a fresh perspective on adventure while still emphasizing core scouting values like preparedness and community service. Families are also taking part in evening cookouts and storytelling sessions, making the most of the mild weather.
The weekend-long campout, which runs through Sunday, also includes guided tours of the raceway facilities and demonstrations on track safety and vehicle mechanics. For many scouts, sleeping under the stars next to a professional racing venue provides a memorable twist on the classic camping experience, blending the thrill of motorsports with the timeless traditions of scouting.
