AUSTIN -- Texas has created a new artificial intelligence division within its state government to assist agencies in evaluating and adopting AI tools. The unit, announced by Texas Chief Information Officer Tony Sauerhoff, aims to provide a structured path for testing new technology before it is deployed across state services.
Sauerhoff said the division will act as a central resource, helping agencies navigate the complexities of AI implementation. This includes reviewing potential use cases, assessing risks, and ensuring compliance with existing state laws and security standards. The goal is to avoid fragmented or uncoordinated adoption of AI across different departments.
The move comes as many state governments grapple with how to regulate and leverage AI. Texas officials emphasized that the division is not meant to slow innovation but to create a safe testing environment. Agencies can submit proposals for pilot projects, and the AI division will help evaluate their feasibility and potential impact.
Sauerhoff also addressed recent personnel changes within the state's IT leadership, noting that the core mission remains unchanged. He said the state will continue to focus on modernizing infrastructure and improving digital services for residents, with the new AI division serving as a key part of that effort. The division is expected to publish guidelines for agencies in the coming months.
