Artemis Technologies has unveiled its newest electric hydrofoil vessel, the EF-12, calling it the world's first completely electric and zero-emissions pilot boat. Designed specifically for transporting ship pilots, the craft aims to make these essential maritime transfers both greener and safer.
The EF-12 uses hydrofoil technology to lift its hull above the water at higher speeds, reducing drag and energy consumption. This allows the boat to operate quietly and efficiently, cutting down on fuel use and emissions compared to traditional diesel-powered pilot boats. Artemis says the design also improves stability and comfort for pilots who need to board large vessels in rough seas.
The boat is built to handle the demanding conditions of harbor work, where quick and reliable transport is critical. By eliminating combustion engines, the EF-12 removes exhaust fumes and noise pollution, which benefits both the crew and the marine environment. The company sees this as a step toward decarbonizing the maritime industry, which has been slower than other sectors to adopt electric propulsion.
While electric ferries and leisure boats have become more common, pilot boats present unique challenges due to their need for high speed and maneuverability. Artemis claims the EF-12 meets those demands without sacrificing performance. The vessel is now in the water for testing, with plans to put it into service for pilot transfers in the near future.
