A research team at the University of Canterbury is using artificial intelligence and computer vision to look inside plants in a way that could change how growers manage their crops. Professor Richard Green, who leads the UC Vision lab, and researcher Dr. Richie Ellingham have developed a system that can identify and measure objects hidden beneath leaves and other plant surfaces.
The technology works by analyzing visual data that human eyes cannot easily process. Using advanced imaging and machine learning algorithms, the system can detect fruit, buds, or disease symptoms even when they are partially covered by foliage. This allows farmers and horticulturists to assess crop health, estimate yields, and spot problems earlier without having to manually inspect each plant.
Traditional methods often require workers to move leaves aside or rely on destructive sampling. The new approach is non-invasive and can be automated, potentially saving time and labor. The team has tested the system on various crops, including apples and grapes, with promising results.
Professor Green noted that the ability to see through leaves is not about literal x-ray vision but about training AI to recognize patterns and shapes that are partially obscured. The technology could eventually be integrated into drones or robotic harvesters, giving growers real-time data on their fields. While still in development, the research points toward a future where AI helps make horticulture more efficient and precise.
