Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has renewed her call to dismantle major technology corporations, arguing that their market dominance leads to unchecked power and higher costs for consumers. In a recent statement, the Democrat said that large tech firms are seeking "totally unchecked power" and that the only solution is to split them up.
"The problem that we have is that these big companies have become too concentrated," Ocasio-Cortez said. She linked the lack of competition to recent price hikes across various digital services, from cloud storage to online advertising. According to the congresswoman, when a handful of firms control the market, they can raise prices without fear of losing customers to smaller rivals.
Ocasio-Cortez has long been a vocal critic of Silicon Valley giants like Amazon, Google, and Meta. She argues that breaking up these companies would foster innovation, protect user privacy, and lower costs for everyday Americans. Her latest comments come amid growing bipartisan frustration over corporate consolidation, though lawmakers remain divided on how aggressively to regulate the industry.
Critics of the proposal warn that forced breakups could disrupt services millions rely on and weaken U.S. competitiveness globally. However, Ocasio-Cortez insists that the current system is unsustainable. "We cannot have a handful of billionaires controlling the flow of information and commerce," she said. "It is time to restore competition and put power back in the hands of the people."
