More than 2,500 parents across Central Virginia are calling on school leaders to rethink the role of technology in the classroom. The growing movement urges districts to impose stricter limits on student screen time while expanding opportunities for tactile, hands-on learning.
The push comes as schools continue to rely heavily on laptops, tablets, and educational apps, a trend accelerated by the pandemic. Parents argue that excessive screen use is harming children's attention spans, social skills, and physical health. They point to rising rates of eye strain, anxiety, and reduced physical activity among students.
"We are not anti-technology," said one parent involved in the effort. "But we want balance. Kids need to write with pencils, build things with their hands, and talk to each other face to face."
The group has presented its concerns to several school boards, asking for a review of daily screen time policies. They also advocate for more funding for art, music, shop class, and outdoor education programs. Some schools have already begun piloting "tech-free" blocks during the day, where students engage in group discussions, crafts, or science experiments without digital devices.
Educators acknowledge the challenge. While technology can personalize learning and provide access to vast resources, many agree that overuse can be counterproductive. The debate highlights a broader national conversation about the role of screens in childhood development.
Parents say they will continue to press for change, hoping to see classrooms where keyboards and crayons coexist.
