Two retired military cybersecurity experts in Virginia have launched a mobile education bus in the Hampton Roads area, aiming to bring technology training directly to students who lack access. The initiative began after the pair received an unexpected state budget appropriation that allowed them to turn their idea into reality.
The bus, equipped with laptops, coding kits, and robotics gear, travels to schools, community centers, and neighborhoods where technology resources are scarce. The founders, both veterans of the cybersecurity field, say they saw a clear gap between the tech skills taught in some classrooms and the opportunities available to students from lower-income families. Rather than waiting for students to come to a fixed location, they decided to bring the classroom to them.
Inside the retrofitted vehicle, students can learn basic programming, network security concepts, and even try their hands at building small circuits. The program targets middle and high school students, though younger children are also welcome at some stops. The founders emphasize that the goal is not just to teach technical skills but to spark curiosity and show students that careers in technology are within reach.
The bus has already made several stops across the region, drawing interest from local school districts and after-school programs. Organizers hope to expand the route and add more equipment as funding allows. For now, they are focused on building trust with the communities they serve and proving that a mobile classroom can make a real difference.
