Honda is making a serious move in the electric vehicle race by joining forces with QuantumScape, a company known for its work on next-generation battery tech. The two firms have signed a deal to develop solid-state batteries, with production targeted to start around 2027. This is a big step for Honda, which has been quieter than some rivals when it comes to battery innovation.
Solid-state batteries are often called the holy grail for EVs. Unlike the lithium-ion cells used today, they use a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid one. That means they can hold more energy in the same space, charge faster, and are less likely to catch fire. For drivers, that translates into longer range and shorter stops at charging stations. Honda hopes that by working with QuantumScape, it can close the gap with leaders like Toyota and Tesla, who are also investing heavily in similar tech.
QuantumScape, based in California, has been developing its own solid-state design for years. The partnership with Honda gives it a major automaker to scale up production with. Honda, in turn, gets access to a technology that could redefine its EV lineup. The plan is not just for cars either. Solid-state batteries could also power motorcycles and even aircraft down the road.
The 2027 target is ambitious. Most experts agree that solid-state batteries are still a few years away from mass production, mainly because of manufacturing challenges. But Honda is betting that a strong partner can speed things up. If all goes well, the first vehicles with these batteries will hit the market before the decade ends. Until then, Honda will keep using its current battery tech, but the future is clearly pointing toward something new.
