School systems across the country are moving forward with digital learning tools, but the push to modernize classrooms is meeting a wave of caution from educators and administrators. At the 2026 MACo Summer Conference, a panel of education leaders and technology experts urged schools to adopt a pragmatic approach, warning that new software and devices are not a cure-all for learning challenges.
The discussion centered on the gap between the promise of educational technology and the realities of daily instruction. Panelists noted that while digital platforms can offer personalized pacing and immediate feedback, they also introduce distractions, screen fatigue, and equity issues for students without reliable internet access at home. One superintendent pointed out that a new learning management system does little if teachers are not given adequate time to train on it or if the curriculum is not redesigned around the tool.
The consensus was clear: integration should be gradual and driven by clear learning goals, not by vendor pitches or the pressure to appear innovative. Schools are advised to pilot programs in small groups, collect data on actual student performance, and be willing to abandon tools that do not show measurable benefits. The panel also stressed the importance of keeping human interaction at the center, with technology serving as a support rather than a replacement for direct teaching.
As districts plan their budgets for the coming year, the message is to invest wisely, set realistic expectations, and remember that the most effective classroom tool remains a well-prepared teacher.
