LPD deploys automated surveillance technology to monitor Flower Festival crowds

Visitors to the Lompoc Valley Flower Festival last weekend might have overlooked a nondescript trailer tucked between the parade floats and food vendors, but the Lompoc Police Department had it positioned there for a specific reason. The department deployed an automated surveillance system to monitor crowd activity during the annual event, marking a new approach to public safety at large gatherings.

The trailer, equipped with high-definition cameras and real-time video analytics, allowed officers to track crowd density, spot unusual behavior, and respond more quickly to potential incidents. Police officials said the technology was not used for facial recognition or to identify individuals, but rather to provide a broader situational awareness across the festival grounds. The system can detect things like sudden gatherings of people, unattended bags, or vehicles moving in restricted areas.

Lompoc Police Chief said the goal was to keep the event safe without being intrusive. "We wanted people to enjoy the festival without feeling like they were being watched in a personal way," he explained. "The system gives us a tool to see the big picture, not to zoom in on anyone's private moment."

The move comes as more law enforcement agencies experiment with automated surveillance at public events, balancing safety concerns with privacy rights. Some civil liberties groups have raised questions about the long-term use of such technology, but Lompoc police emphasized that the system was only active during the festival and that no data was stored or shared afterward.

Festival attendees interviewed after the event had mixed reactions. Some said they appreciated the added security, while others admitted they felt uneasy knowing they were being monitored. For now, the department plans to evaluate the system's performance before deciding whether to use it again next year.
