Lummus Technology, a global provider of energy technology solutions, has announced that GPS Renewables has selected its ethanol-to-jet (ETJ) technology for a major sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project in India. The facility will convert ethanol into jet fuel, aiming to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector.
The project marks a significant step in India's push for cleaner fuel alternatives. GPS Renewables, a company focused on bioenergy and waste-to-energy solutions, will use Lummus' ETJ process to produce SAF at commercial scale. This technology is designed to efficiently transform ethanol from various feedstocks, including agricultural residues and industrial waste, into high-quality jet fuel.
Lummus Technology stated that the partnership aligns with growing global demand for sustainable aviation fuel. The aviation industry faces increasing pressure to lower its carbon footprint, and SAF is seen as a key solution. India, as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets, is actively seeking ways to integrate renewable fuels.
The specific location and timeline for the project were not disclosed, but the announcement highlights the potential for scaling up SAF production in the region. Lummus noted that its ETJ technology offers a reliable pathway for producing drop-in fuel that meets international standards. This development could help reduce reliance on fossil-based jet fuel and support India's energy transition goals.
