Strategy before technology

Strategy before technology

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a ubiquitous presence across university campuses, embedded within classrooms, student advising systems, and the daily academic routines of learners. Despite its widespread adoption, the student experience with this technology remains profoundly uneven. In one course, a student might engage with an intelligent tutoring system, while in another, they face a professor who has banned AI tools entirely. This inconsistency highlights a critical gap: the rush to adopt innovative technology has far outpaced the development of coherent institutional strategy.

The core issue is that technology is often deployed in isolation, without a overarching framework that aligns it with fundamental educational goals. Simply providing access to AI platforms is insufficient. Institutions must first answer essential questions about the purpose of these tools. Are they meant to supplement instruction, personalize learning pathways, or automate administrative tasks? Without a clear vision, AI implementations risk being fragmented, confusing, and potentially inequitable.

Faculty and staff are left without proper guidance or training, leading to ad-hoc policies that vary wildly from one department to the next. This not only creates confusion but also widens the digital divide, as students navigate an inconsistent landscape of access and expectation. For AI to fulfill its promise of enhancing education, colleges and universities must pause and prioritize. A thoughtful, inclusive strategy—focusing on pedagogy, ethics, professional development, and equitable access—must be the essential foundation upon which all technological solutions are built. The future of learning depends not on the tools themselves, but on the thoughtful human framework guiding their use.
