A family in Villa Hills is convinced that criminals used advanced technology to steal their vehicle right from their own driveway, without ever touching the keys. The theft occurred late Tuesday night, leaving the homeowners baffled and frustrated.
The family reported that their car was parked securely in the driveway, with the key fob safely inside the house. Yet, by morning, the vehicle was gone. There were no broken windows, no signs of forced entry, and no tire tracks that suggested a tow truck. The only explanation, they believe, is that the thieves used a device to intercept the signal from the key fob inside the home.
This type of crime, often called a relay attack, involves two devices. One thief stands near the house to capture the signal from the key fob, while another stands near the car to relay that signal. The car then thinks the key is nearby and unlocks and starts. It is a silent, quick method that leaves almost no evidence.
Local police are investigating the incident and have warned neighbors to take precautions. They suggest storing key fobs in metal containers or signal-blocking pouches, sometimes called Faraday bags, to prevent the signal from being captured. Some experts also recommend turning off the keyless entry feature on the vehicle if possible.
The family is now without a car and is urging others to be aware of this growing threat. They hope that by sharing their story, other residents will take steps to protect their vehicles from high-tech thieves. The investigation remains ongoing.
