General Motors has quietly begun a data collection effort in Fort Myers, using a fleet of specially equipped vehicles to map and record the area's roadways. The cars, which are being driven by trained test drivers, are fitted with an array of sensors including high-resolution cameras, radar units, and lidar systems that bounce laser pulses off objects to create detailed 3D maps.
The goal is not to test autonomous driving on public streets just yet. Instead, the operation focuses on gathering vast amounts of real-world driving data. This includes traffic patterns, pedestrian behavior, road signage, and the subtle quirks of local intersections. By capturing this information in a mid-sized Florida city, GM aims to improve the algorithms that will eventually power its self-driving technology in more complex urban environments.
Fort Myers was chosen for its mix of highway, suburban, and older downtown streets, as well as its seasonal weather patterns. The vehicles are clearly marked as data collection units, and the drivers are instructed to follow all traffic laws. A company spokesperson said the data will help make future autonomous systems safer and more reliable, though no timeline was given for when driverless cars might actually operate in the region. For now, the work is purely about building a digital foundation.
