STC’s Business, Public Safety and Technology Faculty Mobilize to Prepare Students for an AI-Driven Future

Faculty across South Texas College's Division of Business, Public Safety and Technology are joining forces to make sure students do not get left behind as artificial intelligence reshapes the workplace. The effort is not about teaching a single class on AI. Instead, instructors are weaving AI literacy into the fabric of their programs, from accounting and criminal justice to computer networking and supply chain management.

The goal is practical. Students need to know how to use AI tools responsibly, how to spot bias in automated systems, and how to work alongside machines without losing the human touch. Faculty members have been meeting regularly to share lesson plans, test new software, and discuss what employers are actually asking for on the job. Some programs are already using AI for mock interviews, data analysis exercises, and scenario-based training in emergency response.

Division leaders say the push is a direct response to local industry feedback. Businesses in the Rio Grande Valley are adopting AI for everything from inventory tracking to customer service, and they want graduates who can hit the ground running. The college is also looking at certificate options that focus on AI applications for people already working, not just full-time students.

Faculty stress that this is not about replacing critical thinking with automation. It is about giving students the confidence to question AI output and make better decisions. One instructor compared it to learning to drive a car with power steering, you still need to know the rules of the road. The initiative is rolling out this fall, with more workshops and curriculum updates planned for the spring semester.
