The tenured engineers of 2026

The MIT School of Engineering has announced the promotion of ten faculty members to tenured positions in 2026. The group includes Jacob Andreas, Zachary Cordero, Christina Delimitrou, Sili Deng, David Des Marais, Carmen Guerra-Garcia, Laura Lewis, Tami Lieberman, Kevin O'Brien, and Wim van Rees.

These professors represent a broad range of engineering disciplines, from artificial intelligence and computer systems to aerospace materials and environmental microbiology. Their work spans both theoretical foundations and practical applications, including advances in machine learning, sustainable energy, and biological engineering.

Tenure at MIT is a rigorous process that recognizes sustained excellence in research, teaching, and service to the institution. The new cohort brings the total number of tenured faculty in the School of Engineering to over 250.

The appointments reflect the school's ongoing investment in emerging fields and interdisciplinary research. Several of the newly tenured professors lead labs that bridge traditional boundaries, such as combining fluid dynamics with electrical engineering or merging public health data with computational modeling.

MIT has not released specific start dates for the new appointments, but the promotions are effective for the 2026 academic year. The school plans to formally introduce the tenured faculty at a ceremony later this spring.
