The Federal Communications Commission has appointed Cliff Jones as the new Associate Chief and Chief of the Laboratory Division within the Office of Engineering and Technology. Jones will oversee the agency's technical testing and research operations, which play a central role in evaluating new wireless technologies and ensuring compliance with federal standards.
Jones brings extensive experience in telecommunications and engineering leadership. He previously held senior roles in both the private sector and government, where he focused on spectrum management, equipment authorization, and advanced communications systems. His background includes work on next-generation network infrastructure and radio frequency testing.
The Laboratory Division is responsible for testing and certifying a wide range of electronic devices, from smartphones to broadcast transmitters, to ensure they meet FCC technical rules. The division also conducts research on emerging technologies such as 5G, satellite communications, and spectrum sharing.
Industry observers note that Jones takes the role at a time when the FCC is facing growing pressure to manage spectrum efficiently amid surging demand for wireless services. His appointment signals continuity in the agency's technical leadership as it tackles complex issues around interference, equipment standards, and innovation.
Jones replaces the previous lab chief, who retired earlier this year. He is expected to begin his duties immediately.
