A new portable PET imaging system is changing how doctors perform interventional procedures by delivering high-quality scans at the point of care. Unlike traditional PET scanners that require patients to be moved to a dedicated radiology suite, this compact device can be wheeled directly to the bedside or procedure room. It is designed to image any organ in the body, providing surgeons and interventional radiologists with immediate visual feedback during operations.
The technology works by detecting positron emission signals from a small, mobile unit. Researchers say the images are sharp enough to guide biopsies, tumor ablations, and other targeted treatments with precision. This eliminates the need for patients to be transferred mid-procedure or rely on pre-operative scans that may not reflect real-time changes in anatomy.
Clinical trials have shown that the system reduces procedure times and improves accuracy. Doctors can see exactly where a needle or catheter is positioned relative to a lesion, adjusting their approach on the spot. The device also lowers radiation exposure compared to repeated CT scans.
While still in early adoption, the portable PET scanner is expected to be particularly useful in emergency settings and for patients who are too unstable to move. Its development marks a step toward making advanced molecular imaging more accessible in everyday clinical practice.
